Description:
Reaction to the Tariff of Abominations (1828)
- southerners feel like the tariff unfairly affects them
- South Carolina, led by John C. Calhoun, declares the tariff null and void (point back to Kentucky and Virginia Resolutions of 1789)
- Jackson gets Congress to pass the Force Bill (1833), which authorizes military enforcement
- Henry Clay comes up with a compromise to reduce tariffs (American System)
