in 1180 the byzantine emporer, Manuel, died and the new Byzantine leader, Andronicus Comnenus, who seized power from Manuel's son in 1182, signed a new peace treaty with Saladin, which guaranteed Byzantine neutrality from the near east in the early 1180s.
