o 1st crusade called by Pope Urban II in 1095 against “heretics” (not heathens)
 Heretics have the same religion, but not quite the same thing
 There is commonality of sharing old testament and derived from same religions, that the Pope realizes the heretics are blocking holy sites

o Jerusalem taken in 1099
o Last mainland crusader stronghold lost in 1291: historically short-lived adventure
o Consequence: increased cultural contact with civilized Muslim world
