 Arab Muslims conquer much of Byzantine Empire
 By 723, Merovingian army under Charles Martel stops Muslim advance at Poitiers (~300 km S-W of Paris)
• Martel == Hammer == Military hammer of the Muslims
 Kings often lived in the palace, while the mayor did the work, Charles Martel was a mayor
 He cut the king’s hair chopped off (because they believed in long hair of kings) and took the throne himself
 Spain remains Muslim for 7 centuries
• One of the most civilized for those centuries
• Kept literacy and university going
