Jacobian Era (sep 12, 1603 – apr 21, 1625)
Description:
Queen Elizabeth called for King James VI of Scotland to rule England after her death, and so he became king James I of England and the first ruler of the United Kingdom.
Money to fund the king's lavish lifestyle soon became a problem. Either the king could destroy parliament and take its share of the money or the king could lose his ability to tax the people. Religious disputes complicated the matter.
During this time, many went to America for religious freedom and economic advancement.
The Jamestown Colony was founded in 1607 and the Plymouth Colony in 1620 for pilgrims.
In literature, masques saw development during this time and Shakespeare produced the last of his plays.
