- Kwantung Army of the Empire of Japan invaded Manchuria immediately following the Mukden Incident- Following the war, the Japanese established the puppet state of Manchukuo, and their occupation lasted until the Soviet Union and Mongolia launched the Manchurian Strategic Offensive Operation in 1945
- Eastern parts of Manchuria and most of the Korean Peninsula had already been under the control of the Japanese empire for three decades after the Russo Japanese war of 1895
