Description:
The Battle of Antietam occurred in Antietam creek which was near Sharpsburg, Maryland. It posed a battle between the Confederate General Robert E. Lee and Union General George McClellan. The battle began on September 17, 1862, Longstreet’s and Hill’s forces held the Confederate’s right and center flanks, while Jackson’s and Brigadier General John G. Walker’s forces held the left flank. The Union army was almost double the Confederate army, the Confederate army was also very weak and hungry. The Battle of Antietam was one of the most brutal as there were over 23,000 casualties and 3,650 dead. Since the Union army outnumbered the Confederate army 2:1, the Confederate army was forced to retreat out of Union soil.
