Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina (jan 1, 1525 – jan 1, 1594)
Description:
Widely seen as the composer who best upheld the "reformed" church ideal of music, Palestrina composed over 100 settings of the Roman Catholic Mass. He was an organist and a choirmaster, and his music was later seen by Bach as the epitome of the "old style".
