Tolimo (may 29, 1971 – aug 11, 1979)
Description:
TOLIMO first attained its notoriety when in 1972 it petitioned the OAU to help attain its goals, citing the fact that in Ghana the Ewe were among the poorer strata in the country, while in Togo they were the leaders of economic life. The movement, though banned in Ghana in 1975, received formal support from the Eyadema regime for some time. Eyadema even had several ministers specifically charged with liaising (i.e., controlling) the movement, both at home and in Ghana.
Pointing to the failure of the 1970s group, TOLIMO [The National Liberation Movement of Western Togo] , to garner significant support for the secession of the former British Togoland from Ghana, and the winding up of its operations in 1977, Nugent concluded: “As far as the politics of unificationism is concerned, therefore, this really is the end of the story.”
