Diet of Worms (jan 28, 1521 – may 25, 1521)
Description:
The diet of worms was an attempt by the Catholic Church and the Holy Roman Empire to get Martin Luther to recant his ideas and to quell the growing tide of resentment and anger at the church. This backfired immensely, and only served to legitimize Luther's ideas and broaden his outreach. After Luther refused to back down, the church decided to brand him a heretic. This forced Luther into hiding, where he took shelter with a german prince who facilitated the spread of his ideas.
