Council of Trent (jul 20, 1545 – jan 2, 1563)

Description:

Pope Paul III called a council of the Catholic church in order to prevent its power from diminishing further. It was neither supported by France, who wanted a weak Holy Roman Empire, nor by Charles V, who didn't want to alienate the Protestant princes who reported to him. However many reforms did come out of the meetings of the council which took place over 20 years. They banned the sale of indulgences, cracked down on clerical corruption, and placed more focus on the scripture than they had previously. However the church didn't strive for reconciliation with Protestants. Nor did they support laypeople interpreting the bible. The council did still capture reinvigorated spiritual interest in the church and it promoted proselytization by Jesuits.
