RENAISSANCE PERIOD (jan 1, 1300 – dec 25, 1600)

Description:

The period extending roughly from 1300 to 1600 was declared by Italian histories of the time to mark Renaissance, or rebirth of the humanistic spirit of classical antiquity. In literature and philosophy, Western Europe veered away from a largely Roman orientation toward an inclusion of Greek studies, particularly the works of Plato and Homer.

In Latin, the humanists sought inspiration in the classical style of Cicero, Luretius, Vigil, and Tacitus rather than in the writings of the medieval church fathers. More broadly the humanist placed more emphasis on man and his values, especially the dignity of man as realized in the study of the humanity rather than scholastic theology.

The Renaissance type of poetry began in Italy and France. The verse forms not common before in English poems was brought to England by Sir Thomas Wyatt. The model and inspiration for this new poetry was the Italian Petrarch who lived at about the same time as Chaucer.

The end of the 15th century and the beginning of 10th century saw the height of Italian Renaissance.
