Civil war spreading from Vendée & hostile armies surrounding France - Revolutionary gov. decided to make “Terror” the order of the day (Sept. 5) to take harsh measures against people who were suspected to be the enemies of the revolution (as in priests, hoarders or noblemen). In Paris a wave of executions followed. In the provinces, representatives on mission and surveillance committees instituted local terrors.Added to timeline:
