Reign of Elizabeth I (sep 7, 1533 – mar 24, 1603)

Description:

Elizabeth succeeded to the throne after the death of her half-sister Mary. There were sharp divisions with regard to religion during the time, so Elizabeth compromised by moving the Church of England in a moderately Protestant direction. She was supreme in matters of religion and politics, and required that her subjects attend Church of England services, but she didn't interfere with people's private beliefs. These policies were the start of religious stability in England. In addition, Elizabeth was credited with the defeat of the Spanish Armada, which strengthened the English navy and nationalism, and prevented further insurrections of Catholicism in England.
