Period In India (apr 18, 1497 – oct 19, 1961)
Description:
1) Many of coastal parts of India had come under Portuguese power within fifty years of Vasco da Gama’s arrival.
2) Portuguese had occupied sixty miles of coast around Goa.
3) Mumbai to Daman and Diu, in south had seaport fortresses and trading posts at Mangalore, Cochin, Cannanore and Calicut.
3) Military posts and establishments on east at San Thome ( Chennai) & Nagapatnam (Andhra)
4) Towards the end of 16th century a wealthy settlement had grown at Hooghly in West Bengal.
5) Portuguese were first to come and last to leave India in 1961.
