Bartolomé visits the Indies for the first time (jan 1, 1502 – apr 26, 1502)
Description:
With his father at the age of 18, Las Casas immigrated to the island of Hispaniola in 1502 on the expedition of Nicolás de Ovando with 25,000 other eager explorers bound for the Indies. Las Casas became a hacendado and slave owner, receiving a piece of land in the province of Cibao. He participated in slave raids and military expeditions against the native Taíno population of Hispaniola.
