"Bleeding Kansas" (may 30, 1854 – dec 31, 1861)
Description:
Since Kansas was made a slave state, the northerners quickly settled there to try and make an anti-slavery majority. David Atchinson, from Missouri, responded by sending over thousands of Missourians. The Missourians voted illegally to elect a pro-slavery legislature. On May 21, 1856, a group of pro-slavery people attacked the town of Lawrence which held many antislavery people. At the end of this attack, about 200 people had died and $2 million worth of damage was done to the town.
