Japanese embassy hostage crisis (dec 17, 1996 – apr 22, 1997)
Description:
14 MRTA (Tupac Amaru Revolutionary Movement) terrorists took control of the Japanese embassy and held high ranking Japanese congressmen hostage for 126 days until an assault by the Peruvian armed forces took place, killing the 14 rebels. Other casualties involved 2 commandos from the armed forces and 1 Japanese hostage. This event was really bad, as it gave the world that Peru was a really bad place, and it weakened ties with the Japanese.
