Arithmometer Invented (jan 1, 1820 – jan 1, 1851)
Description:
Invented and patented in 1820 by French inventor Thomas de Colmar. The machine was easy to use for all four functions, and could output a number up to 8 digits in length. Thomas did nothing with the machine for the next 22 years, as the government focused on funding Babbage's difference engine. In 1851, after the difference engine was a clear failure, Thomas began to look into marketing his machine. He removed the built in multiplier to make the machine more simple. However, because of its moving display system the machine could still be easily used for multiplication and division. In 1851, industrial production of the Arithmometer started.
