Cartier's Third Voyage (may 1, 1541 – jan 1, 1542)
Description:
Cartier set off on his third voyage to the New World in May 1541. The goal of this expedition was to establish a permanent settlement along the Saint Lawrence River. While Cartier was the explorer of this expedition, the managment of the colony was given to Jean-François de La Rocque, sieur de Roberval a senior military officer. However, when the expedition occurred only Cartier, and half of the settlers set sail to the New World. Jean-Francois was delayed due to war in Europe at the time. Cartier reached, and settled on the Saint Lawrence River. During this time the settlement was attacked by Natives. Cartier decided that colony was not worth the trouble, as Roberval wasn't due to arrive for another several months. Before leaving, Cartier gathered barrels of what were though to be precious metals of diamonds. Upon reaching Newfoundland Roberval had caught up to Cartier, and ordered him back to Cape Rouge (The settlement). Cartier refused the order, and set sail back to France under the cover of the night. Upon reaching France, the metals collected where deemed worthless, and Cartier days of being a funded explorer by France was over.
