Townshend Acts (jan 1, 1767 – dec 31, 1768)

Description:

Series of Acts of Parliament named after Charles Townshend (Chancellor of the Exchequer), who proposed the program; meant to raise revenues in the colonies to pay governors and judges, to punish New York for failing to comply with the Mutiny Act of 1765, and to establish the precedent that Parliament had the right to tax the colonies; met with resistance in the colonies, eventually resulting in the Boston Massacre of 1770
