Haudenosaunee Confederacy (apr 7, 1400 – apr 7, 1776)

Description:

The Confederacy which saw multiple Native groups coming together to become the Haudenosaunee government, it hosted representatives of different groups to support individual needs as a collective. While being a representative democracy, it did allow any adult in the groups to participate, even women. Individual rights were essential because no one was seen as less important than another regardless of gender. Everyone was granted freedom of speech.

The Confederacy is recognized as part of what influenced more liberalism in the North American government. The first government proposed for the colonies was structured similarly, and the liberalism it brought was considered a sign of progress for both European and North American colonial leaders. The representative democracy remains favoured by North America and Europe to this day.
