The Renaissance (jan 1, 1350 – jan 31, 1500)
Description:
From the French word meaning rebirth, the Renaissance was when European scholars brought back classical Greek ideas about the worth of individuals following the depression of the middle ages. It brought about a big reform in how people thought about individualism and began the forming of modern humanism. Reason began to be placed above faith in some situations, and individual rights and freedoms became more in line with the collective.
Many large city-states took on such thinking when Constantinople fell to the Ottoman Empire and scholars fled to other states. Printing became more accessible which made education easier. The artists, philosophers, and inventors in such cities began to view the world differently and left behind them works that examined the world through its individuals. This led to the broadening mindset that any individual could do something more.
