-Everything was forced— everything he built was on the backs of peasants, which is why reforms weren't permanent

Peter went to the East in order to learn from Europe. Basically he went to every country and tried to learn from them. (and partied hard) We watched a video about it in class. This helped him build a good navy to beat the Turks and Sweden.

Cut off beards and coats to Europeanize his country.

Table of Ranks- Established a merit system for nobility.

Wanted a warm water port- One of the main themes of Russia is trying to get a warm water port. With a warm water port, they can engage in trade and get rich like the rest of the big European powers.
