Establishment of Mosque al-Azhar (jan 1, 969 – jan 1, 973)

Founded by the Fatimids in 970 AD as a mosque dedicated to worship and learning centre, it developed over the centuries into the most important center of Islamic learning in the world. Al-Azhar Mosque gained attention students from all over the world to learn about the history of Islam and thought of interpretation of the Quran. Not long after the establishment of al-Azhar mosque, the university of al-Azhar also began to developed. It was founded by the Ismaili Shi’i in Fatimid Dynasty and became Sunni university under subsequent dynasties in Egypt. Over more than a thousand years of establishment of the mosque, it has been renovated and expanded many times and yet still surviving even though there is a changes of politics and government. The different architectural styles of its five minarets bear witness to the different dynasties that controlled Al-Azhar. The mosque was built with a large covered prayer area, and two religious schools. Before Azhar University expanded and moved primarily to a second campus in the north part of the city, students used to meet with instructors in the main courtyard and learn Arabic and the Quran. Today, while there are hundreds of old mosques to visit in Cairo, there is none that can compete with Al-Azhar Mosque in standing and importance to the history of Islam.
