Death of Murad I, Ottoman Sultan (jun 20, 1389 BC – may 27, 1361 BC)

Description:

Death of Murad I, Ottoman Sultan who ruled from 1361 - 1389)

I choose this event because it left the significant role in Islamic history during the Osmanli rule. Sultan Murad I reign witnessed rapid Osmanli expansion in the European part of the area and the emergence of new forms of government and administration to consolidate Osmanli rule in these areas.

He was the second son of Sultan Orkhan and his mother was daughter of the Prince of Yarhisar, who was of ethnic Greek descent. He established the sultanate by building up a society and government in the newly conquered city of Adrianople and by expanding the realm in Europe, bringing most of the Balkans under Ottoman rule and forcing the Byzantine emperor to pay him tribute. It was Murad who established the former Osmanli tribe into an sultanate. He established the title of sultan in 1383 and the corps of the janissaries and the recruiting system. He also organised the government of the Diwan, the system of timars and timar-holders and the military judge, the kazasker. He also established the two provinces of Anatolia and Rumali (Europe).Murad himself invaded with relatively small numbers, but by the end of his reign he was able to raise large numbers of troops settled as Timariots across the Balkons.

He was killed at the Battle of Kossovo in 1389, although the battle was an Ottoman victory and crushed the last Serbian resistance to the Turks, leaving the burden to fall on the Hungarians. During his reign he conquered Bulgaria, Macedonia and Serbia.
