Description:
Unmarried orphans or poor widowed women sponsored by the King of France (Louis XIV), are sent to the colonies to help settlements grow
- about 800 in total
- extremely successful in terms of expanding the population
- Estimated that nearly 2/3rd of French Canadians can trace their lineage back to a Fille du Roi (there was a pension for life for giving birth to more than 10 children)
