Phillip II (mar 7, 1527 – dec 26, 1598)
Description:
inherited Spain, the Spanish Netherlands, and the American colonies from his father Charles V.
• Tried to control too much authority ("Paper King") (El Prudente also... lol)
• He did not handle the iconoclast revolt very well - Dutch Republic formed
• Spanish Armada - failure to invade the English that should have been an easy victory
• Overextended politically and militarily, taxing his subjects excessively
• Suffering Economy - war expense, inflation, debt, no Jews and Muslims=no middle class
• Religion before state (anti-politique)
• Married to Queen Mary of England, English were fearful of Spanish rule and re-Catholicism and so English resisted against his rule
• Tried to re-Catholicize all of Europe, which failed
Unable to control sizeable amount of new world land, failed in world domination
Negative impact in kicking out the Jews and Muslims, movement for everyone to be Catholic
Not able to achieve Habsburg unity - France is "sandwiched"
Successful in pushing Ottoman Turks out of the Mediterranean in the Battle of Lepanto (1571) -naval battle.
