Anglo-Herero War (aug 11, 1886 – jan 17, 1890)
Description:
Following a revolt against the loosely controlled British rule in northern Bechuanaland [which killed 40 British civilians], the British declared war on the local Herero people. While first predicted to be a short conflict, the abilities of the natives were heavily underestimated, leading to an unusually high loss of life on the British side.
The final Treaty of Ghanzi established the land between the Portuguese border and the 22nd parallel as the new British Protectorate of Hereroland.
