- responsible for transforming Chicago's landscape with his architecture and landscapes
- steel frames allowed walls to be non-load bearing (exterior walls can be used for ornamentation rather than supporting)
- elevators allowed them to build upward
- as cities expanded, they took advantage of the vertical space
Guaranty Building 1895
- made of terracotta tiles
- ornamented with mosaics and natural and geometric forms
- emphasized verticals with piers and accentuated the horizontal layers with ornamented bands
