Henry I (aug 5, 1100 – dec 1, 1135)

Description:

Youngest son of William I. Seized throne after Rufus's sudden death. Married Matilda of Scotland, an Anglo-Saxon descendant of Alfred the Great (she was Edgar Aetheling's niece) in 1100, giving his reign increased legitimacy. Children were daughter Matilda and son William Adelin, who was killed in the White Ship disaster in 1120. Matilda had been married to the Holy Roman Emperor Henry V in 1110. Henry was able to maintain control of Normandy against French, Angevin, and Flemish encroachment. With no heirs, Henry considered naming his nephew Stephen of Blois (his mother was Adela of Normandy, Henry's sister), but when Emperor Henry died in 1125, he decided to marry Matilda to Geoffrey of Anjou. son of his Angevin rival Fulk, and name her as his heir.
