Lesser known battles Battle of Pea Ridge (mar 7, 1862 – mar 8, 1862)

Description:

Usually when people think of the Civil War states such as Virginia and Tennessee come to mind. However, in 1862 the Battle of Pea Ridge was fought in.... Missouri. Missouri, originally a slave state, was part of the Union, but it had strong secessionist ideas.

The Confederates were led by General Van Dorn who proposed to attack the Union Army from the Southwest by manoeuvring around the Union right flank. However, this manoeuvre led to the division of their own forces, and Union scouts detected them. The Confederates still had an advantage in numbers and proceeded to attack both flanks. This led to the Confederates pushing back the Union Army, however the Union cavalry attacked the Confederates and caused confusion amongst the Confederate generals. By the evening the the lines in Missouri seemed settled. However the following day the Union unleashed artillery attacks on to the Confederate army. This combined with an attack on the confederate right and centre caused the Confederates to retreat back to Arkansas. The Confederate army escaped, but they could no longer maintained control over Missouri and Missouri stayed in the Union.
