Third Taiwan Strait crisis (jul 20, 1995 – mar 15, 1996)

Description:

The Third Taiwan Strait Crisis was a series of missile tests China conducted from July 1995 to March 1996 in the straits separating China from Taiwan. Although these types of missile tests would normally be considered part of annual assessments, the missiles landed dangerously close to Taiwan’s shores, which many citizens took as a threat, the severity of which was heightened as the presidential elections neared. The tests escalated until the U.S. provided Taiwan with support and defense by sending a military ship to the Taiwan straits. While this created some initial tension, relations were eventually resolved and an agreement regarding the management of maritime incidents between China and the U.S. was signed in January of 1998.
