Three Gorges Dam (jan 1, 1993 – jun 29, 2012)

Description:

The process of planning and building the Three Gorges Dam lasted for more than half a century, with specific planning starting in 1955, and the generators coming into full operation in mid-2012. The construction of the dam had a rocky journey, with mixed and conflicted reactions from people involved. While claims by advocates of the project argued that the dam would help control flooding surrounding the Yangtze river, improve domestic trading and provide additional power to surrounding areas, the proposal received much criticism and resistance. Some main criticisms regarded the risk of dam collapse, the displacement and eviction of some 1.3 million people, as well as the destruction of precious archaeological sites and breathtaking scenery.
