Vietnam War (nov 1, 1955 – apr 30, 1975)
Description:
The United States’ attempt to contain communism offensively, by fighting alongside South Vietnam against the communist Northern Vietnam. The controversial conflict was characterized by chemical weaponry, land mines, and booby traps and terrible seasonal conditions. The war was largely protested in the U.S. states, with heavy criticism of the atrocities committed, questioning of American involvement, and disagreement with the draft; this criticism largely being a part of the counter culture and anti-war attitudes among the youths of the sixties. Such resentment towards this war is the reason why the U.S. military involvement is much more voluntary.
