Prohibition (jan 1, 1920 – dec 5, 1933)

Description:

Prohibition was the 18th amendment, which established a nationwide ban on the selling and importing of alcoholic beverages. The desired effects of this ban, such as greater sales in other goods and entertainment areas of the economy, as well as “better neighborhoods”, never ended up happening; instead what resulted was deep frustration towards the law. Entertainment industries - such as theater - actually suffered. Loopholes in the law also led to black market illegal liquor trade, the liquor often being tainted. This only made substance abuse worse among Americans, and led people down criminal paths in order to fulfill their needs. These consequences would eventually make the 18th amendment to be the only amendment ever repealed in the U.S.
