Reconstruction (may 16, 1869 – mar 31, 1877)
Description:
Reconstruction was the difficult process of “reconstructing” the United States; bringing back
the Southern states that had seceded during the Civil War. Abraham Lincoln proposed a plan which, given they pledge their loyalty and accept the end of slavery, would pardon and restore the rights southerners. Despite the cessation of slavery, many states particularly in the South did not truly reform, and implemented a variety of discriminatory laws which would carry into the next century, leaving a persistent racial divide and tensions in society. During the reconstruction, president Abraham Lincoln was assassinated, also stunning the nation.
