China's one-child policy (jan 1, 1979 – jan 1, 2016)

Description:

From 1979 to 2016, China implemented a one-child policy to control the population increase. In the beginning, this was seen as a temporary fix by Deng Xiaoping but later was administered as permanent until 2016. The new policy caused many forced abortions and sterilizations in addition to fines and punishments. Some might call this a one-birth policy as twins, triplets, etc. are not subject to this policy. After successfully decreasing the population in 2016, China relaxed its one-child policy and made it eligible for couples to have two children. The new policy was an attempt to fix the aging population and better the economy and workforce.
