Ghana Empire (jan 1, 300 – jan 1, 1200)
Description:
Known correctly as Awkwar. Located in modern west Mali. The economy was mostly trans-Saharan salt and gold trade. The empire became extremely rich from these resources and expanded control over trade routes. This also assisted in the spread of Islam, as the empire was predominantly Muslim. There is little information concerning the decline of the Empire, but most sources agree that it was sacked by some invaders; possibly the Almoravid movement or the neighboring state of Sila.Added to timeline:
