The First Crusade (jan 3, 1096 – feb 16, 1099)
Description:
The first in a series of bloody wars to capture Jerusalem between the Muslims and the Christians. It began as a pilgrimage but ended up being a military undertaking by Roman Catholics. It was Pope Urban II who called for the crusade during the Council of Clermont. However, it was initiated when Alexios I Komnenos requested assistance in fighting invaders from Anatolia.
