Plague of Justinian (jan 6, 541 – nov 13, 542)
Description:
The Plague of Justinian was the first recorded pandemic of the Bubonic Plague. This took place in the Byzantine Empire and was named as such because Justinian I became infected but survived. It is believed to have been started by infected rats arriving on a ship from Egypt. The disease was slightly different from later Bubonic plague outbreaks, in that the bulbous protuberances were less common and necrosis of the hands happened much more.Added to timeline:
