Plague of Justinian (jan 6, 541 – nov 13, 542)

Description:

The Plague of Justinian was the first recorded pandemic of the Bubonic Plague. This took place in the Byzantine Empire and was named as such because Justinian I became infected but survived. It is believed to have been started by infected rats arriving on a ship from Egypt. The disease was slightly different from later Bubonic plague outbreaks, in that the bulbous protuberances were less common and necrosis of the hands happened much more.
