Cuban Independence (jan 1, 1836 – dec 10, 1898)
Description:
There were two major events that happened during Cuba’s strive for independence. The first and most well-known is the ten years’ war. This war lasted from October tenth, 1868 to May twenty eighth, 1878 was the first highly organized attempt the citizens of Cuba had made towards getting independence from Spain. The reason the Cubans decided to revolt was their dissatisfaction with the Spanish rule. The other major event which is more well-known was the Spanish-American War or as it is often referred to the SPAM war. This war was extremely short, it only lasted from April twenty first, 1898 to August thirteenth, 1898. The primary cause for this war was once again the Cuban dissatisfaction with the Spanish rule; However, this time the United States would get involved after the Spanish begin using “brutal extermination tactics” and the USS Maine was sunk in the Havana Harbor. The reason these two events are so significant and crucial to history is because this would lay the foundation for inspiration to others who plan to fight for freedom. It also put forth the Treaty of Paris of 1898 which would give the United States control over Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Philippines.
