Description:
In 1309, Pope Clement V moved the papal seat of power from Rome to the French city of Avignon under pressure from the French king Philip the Fair. The period (which lasted from 1309-1376) was characterized by corruption of church officials. The clergy, including the pope himself, only responded to the needs of large financial donors.
