Babylonian Captivity (Avignon Papacy) (jan 1, 1309 – jan 1, 1376)
Description:
In 1309, Pope Clement V moved the papal seat of power from Rome to the French city of Avignon under pressure from the French king Philip the Fair. The period (which lasted from 1309-1376) was characterized by corruption of church officials. The clergy, including the pope himself, only responded to the needs of large financial donors. It ended when Gregory XI brought the papacy back to Rome, leading into the Great Schism.
