Askia the Great took control of Songhay from the previous Sunni. He was a devout Muslim and adopted a more traditional form of Islam. Under Askia the Great, the nation prospered. He set up a government that had separate bureaucracies for agriculture, agriculture, the army, and the treasury, to each of which he appointed supervising officials.Added to timeline:
