First Five Year Plan (oct 1, 1929 – dec 1, 1932)

Description:

Days irrelevant.
Start of the 'Socialist Offensive'.
- emphasis on heavy industries; coal, oil, electricity, etc.
-1500 enterprises opened.
- electricity production trebled.
- very little growth in consumer goods (i.e. textiles)
- unskilled workers contributed to poor quality goods.
- many targets were not met, or faked.
- negatively impacted by the Great Depression
- built Magnitogorsk (city/mine)
- wages at 3% of the 1930s levels
Dekulakization
- needed workers for the Five-Year-Plans
- needed a scapegoat for economic difficulties, especially agriculture ones
- peasants responded by burning/eating their livestock, leaving nothing for the government
- 5 million 'kulaks' (rich peasants) were deported
