- heralded a return to the class warfare seen in the Civil War, and a repudiation of concessions made with the NEP.
- philosophical studies, cinema, history, art, sciences, literature, etc. were all required to have a proletariat focus and be pro-Soviet Union
- pro-communist art of a particular style was known as 'socialist realism'
- the communist youth - the Komsomol - were very enthusiastic
- became the 'soldiers of production' of the industrial drive
- a Soviet slogan was "The future belongs to the Komsomols"
