1512: Portuguese trade with the Moluccas
1595: Jan Huyghen Van Lincschoten was the first to sail the Cape of Africa. He returned in 1597 with trade rights with Sultan Java
1602: Dutch state general charters D.E.I.C tp have an army/navy, print their own money, 2-year trade monopoly, and start their own settlements in the spice islands (secured control of the east indies )
1641: Dutch take the Moluccas and destroy all the clove trees on the surrounding islands to create a monolply on cloves.
1658: Dutch take Sri Lanka
