son of Herod the Great, ethnarch of Judea, Samaria, IdumeaHis reign was so terrible, a delegation persuaded Augustus to remove him from power and exile him to Gaul. With Archelaus' rule of Judaea terminated, the region come under direct Roman rule as an imperial (as opposed to senatorial) province
