Atlantic Slave Trade (mar 13, 1500 – feb 13, 1800)
Description:
European superiority became justification for slavery based on "support" cited from the Bible, Greek texts, etc. Young men 12-20 were sold for up to 60 pounds a head. 12,000,000 people were taken in 300 years, ~400,000 were taken to Brazil. The demand for sugar plants/workers/sugar exacerbated the demand for slaves. Increased pressure on West Africa to produce more people to be slaves, lead to "social death" (breaking ties with former cutler and being forced to assimilate somewhere new).
Capture--> march from the interior(shackled up)-->to the coast (40-60% died on the march, which could last up to 7 months)
They were placed into barracoons to other materials to be shipped, middle passage, and quarantine. They were then put on boats (Men were put below deck, women and children above deck).
