The Fenian Raids (0h 1min, jan 1, 1866 y – 0h 1min, jan 1, 1871 y)

Description:

The Irish Republican Brotherhood, also known as the Fenians were opposed to British rule over Ireland and began forming a secret society in Ireland in 1858. They allied themselves with the United States and made a series of small unsuccessful raids into British North America that receive a lot of attention from people living in the British colonies. They began by targeting Campobello Island, British Columbia and moved westward after failing the raid. These raids sparked fear in the residents of the attacked cities. In response to these attacks, Britain sent troops to help protect the colonies. In 1862 alone, Britain sent more than 10 000 troops to British North America. In the election following the raid in B.C. voters in the colonies elected politicians that supported Confederation, partly because of the Fenian threat.
